Cayenne jest głównym ośrodkiem i stolicą Gujany Francuskiej. Liczy 51 tys. mieszkańców, a wraz z zespołem 84 tys. Miasto położone jest nad Oceanem Atlantyckim, na półwyspie Cayenne, u ujścia rzeki Mahury. Zostało założone w 1643r. Jest ważnym portem morskim. W pobliżu Cayenne znajduje się międzynarodowy port lotniczy Rochambeau.
