Cerkiew Sweta Sofia została zbudowana w miejscu, w którym wcześniej znajdowała się nekropola Serdiki. Według legendy, cerkiew nazwano imieniem świętej Zofii, córki Justyniana II. W podziemiach można odnaleźć sarkofagi oraz fragmenty fresków z poprzednich budowli.
